Low-Key & Full of Heart | Josiah’s Newborn Session

ree

Before I had a business. Before I had workflows or client prep guides or even a logo—I had a nice camera and a deep desire to preserve what mattered. And that’s how I ended up photographing my nephew Josiah in February 2020.

He was the second son of my middle sister, and by the time he arrived, I had done some research. I’d started learning, watching, and figuring out how to make newborn photos feel natural and meaningful.

His big brother had been my first-ever newborn session—a “let’s figure it out and copy Pinterest” kind of shoot—and Josiah’s felt like the next step forward.

The session was relaxed, fun, and surprisingly fruitful. I remember thinking, “I might not know everything yet—but this feels right.”

And I’ll never forget the feedback my mom gave me that day. (Family can be the most honest critics!) In German, she said something along the lines of: “Just make sure the baby’s arms and legs are either all the way in the picture or not at all… otherwise they look a little misshapen.” It makes me laugh now—but I still hear her voice every time I unwrap a newborn. Details matter.

This was one of those sessions that reminded me: you don’t need perfection to create something beautiful. You just need presence, care, and a willingness to grow.
